Bolgheri: History, Terroir, and Legendary Wine
Set in the Tuscan Maremma, Bolgheri was once a peaceful agricultural area, known for its natural beauty rather than its wines. That all changed in the 1960s when Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot on his estate, Tenuta San Guido.
From this vision, Sassicaia was born—a wine unlike anything Tuscany had seen before, aged in French oak barriques and rich in elegance and depth. At first met with skepticism, Sassicaia eventually rose to international acclaim, sparking the creation of a whole new category of elite wines: the Super Tuscans.
Today, Bolgheri is considered one of Italy’s premier wine regions, home to the prestigious Bolgheri DOC appellation and world-famous labels such as Ornellaia, Masseto, and Guado al Tasso. Thanks to its mild coastal climate, mineral-rich soils, and the expertise of visionary winemakers, the wines of Bolgheri are bold, refined, and unforgettable.
But Bolgheri is not just about wine. It’s a place of poetry and nature, once celebrated by the Italian poet Giosuè Carducci, where sunsets light up the cypress-lined roads and every sip tells a story of passion, courage, and deep connection to the land.
